When You Can't See the Next Step: Trusting God in the Unknown

Have you ever stood at a crossroads with no idea which way to turn? Where the path ahead simply disappears into fog, and every direction feels equally uncertain?

Most of us know that feeling quite well. A decision we can't make. A future we can't picture. A season where God seems to be asking us to move, but He hasn't shown us where.

"Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight." — Proverbs 3:5-6

These are some of the most quoted words in all of Scripture — and some of the hardest to actually live. Because trusting God when you can't see the next step asks something of us that doesn't come naturally: to keep walking before the way is clear.

 

God Rarely Shows Us the Whole Staircase

We long for the full map. We want to see every step, all the way to the destination, so we can feel safe before we move.

But God so often gives us only the next step. Just enough light for the place where our foot will land. It isn't because He's withholding from us — it's because He's inviting us into something deeper than certainty. He's inviting us into trust.

A lamp unto your feet lights the ground right in front of you, not the whole road. It is always enough when we trust God.

 

Leaning Not on Your Own Understanding

Notice what the verse asks. Not that we stop thinking, planning, or using wisdom — but that we stop leaning on our own understanding as the thing that holds us up.

Our understanding is limited. We see a sliver of the picture; God sees all of it. When we insist on understanding everything before we obey, we make our small vision the boss of our big God. Trust means loosening that grip — admitting we don't have to comprehend the whole plan to follow the One who does.

 

Trust Is Something You Do, Not Just Feel

Here's a freeing truth: trust is not mainly a feeling. It's a decision you make, often while your stomach is still in knots.

You may not feel brave. You may not feel sure. But you can still choose to pray instead of panic, to take the small obedient step, to release the outcome into hands far more capable than yours. That choice — made quietly, again and again — is what trusting God actually looks like in real life.

 

He Will Make Your Paths Straight

And here is the promise on the other side of the trust: He will make your paths straight. Not necessarily easy. Not necessarily fast. But straight — guided, purposeful, leading somewhere good even when the route seems to wander.

You may look back a year from now and see that the very season you couldn't understand was the one where God was quietly setting everything in place. The fog was never a sign He'd left. It was the place where you learned to hold His hand.

 

Taking the Next Faithful Step

So if you're standing in the unknown today, you don't need the whole staircase. You only need the next step. Pray over it. Take it. Trust Him with the rest.

He has not lost the plan. He has not lost you. And the path ahead, though hidden from your eyes, is fully known to His.
