When God Feels Far Away
Share
Have you ever gone through a season where God felt distant? Where you prayed and heard only silence, where your faith felt more like going through the motions than a living connection? Perhaps you're in a season like that right now.
If so, please hear this first: feeling far from God is not the same as being far from God. And you are not alone in the feeling — some of the most faithful people in Scripture walked through it too.
"The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit." — Psalm 34:18
Read that again, especially if your heart is heavy today. Not distant from the brokenhearted. Not absent when we're crushed. Close. When we feel He is farthest, this verse insists He is nearest of all.
Feelings Are Real, But They Are Not the Whole Truth
Our feelings matter to God — He never dismisses them. But feelings are not always reliable reporters of reality. We can feel alone in a room full of people who love us. We can feel far from God while He is holding us closer than our own breath.
Grief, exhaustion, loss, and pain can all cast a fog over our sense of His presence. But the fog is not the absence of the sun. Behind the heaviness you may feel today, God has not moved. His nearness doesn't depend on your ability to feel it.
God Draws Near in Our Brokenness
Here is something tender and countercultural: the world tends to pull back from broken things, but God draws near to them. He doesn't wait for us to pull ourselves together before He comes close. He is especially near to the brokenhearted, especially present to the crushed in spirit.
If your heart is shattered today — by loss, by grief, by a wound too deep for words — you are precisely the person this verse is speaking to. Your brokenness has not pushed God away. It has drawn Him near.
When You Can't Find the Words to Pray
Sometimes in the hardest seasons, we can't even pray the way we used to. The words won't come. The most we can manage is a sigh, a tear, a whispered "help."
That is enough. Scripture tells us the Spirit intercedes for us with groanings too deep for words. God is not grading your prayers. When all you can offer is your presence and your pain, He receives it fully. A tear can be a prayer. Simply showing up before Him counts.
Holding On Until the Nearness Returns
Seasons of feeling distant do not last forever. The psalmists who cried "How long, O Lord?" almost always came, in time, to "but I will trust in your unfailing love." The feeling of nearness returns — often quietly, often slowly, but it returns.
Until then, hold on. Keep showing up, even numbly. Lean on the truth when the feelings fail. Let others carry you when you can't carry yourself. And trust that the God who feels far away is, according to His own Word, closer to your broken heart than He has ever been.
A Moment to Reflect
Where in your life do you need to trust that God is near, even when He feels far?
Who might God be inviting you to lean on — or to comfort — in a season of brokenness?
A Blessing for You
Beloved, if your heart is broken today, may you feel the nearness of the God who never leaves. May His presence meet you in the silence, His comfort hold you in the grief, and His love carry you through until joy finds its way back. You are not abandoned. You are not alone. He is close to you — closer than your pain, closer than your fear, closer than you know.
Even now, in the ache, He is near. Hold on. 💜
