Peace Be Still: Finding Calm When Life Feels Like a Storm
Share
Have you ever felt like the waves were about to overwhelm you? Like life had become one storm after another, and you were doing everything you could just to keep the boat from going under?
If so, you're in good company. Even those closest to Jesus once found themselves in a boat, in the dark, certain they were about to drown.
"He got up, rebuked the wind and said to the waves, 'Quiet! Be still!' Then the wind died down and it was completely calm." — Mark 4:39
It's one of the most intense scenes in all the Gospels. The disciples panicking. The wind howling. And Jesus — speaking three small words that the storm itself had no choice but to obey.
The Storm Was Real — and So Was His Presence
It's worth remembering: the disciples weren't imagining the danger. The storm was genuine. The water really was filling the boat. Jesus never rebuked them for the storm being real.
The same is true for you. Your stresses are not small. Your fears are not foolish. The pressures pressing in on you right now are real. But here is the truth that changes everything: the same Jesus who was in the boat with them is in the boat with you. You are not facing the waves alone.
He Speaks Peace Into the Chaos
Notice that Jesus didn't remove the disciples from the storm. He brought peace into it. He didn't lift the boat out of the water — He calmed the water around the boat.
So often we beg God to take us out of the hard thing. And sometimes He does. But more often, He meets us right in the middle of it and says, over our racing hearts, Peace. Be still. The circumstances may not vanish, but His presence calms us within them.
When He Seems to Be Sleeping
Perhaps the most relatable part of the story is this: Jesus was asleep. The disciples cried, "Don't you care that we're drowning?"
Have you ever felt that way? Like heaven has gone quiet, like God is resting while your world rocks? Be encouraged — His apparent silence was never absence. He was in the boat the entire time. He had every intention of bringing them safely to the other side. His stillness was not neglect; it was perfect peace, the kind He desired to give them too.
Letting Him Calm Your Inner Storm
Some storms are out there — circumstances, losses, uncertainties we can't control. But many of our fiercest storms are within — the anxious thoughts, the spinning what-ifs, the heart that won't settle.
To those, He speaks the very same words. Peace. Be still. You can bring Him the storm in your mind right now. You can hand Him the worry you've been carrying. You don't have to calm the waves yourself — you only have to turn to the One who can, and let His peace do what your striving never could.
Coming Through to the Other Side
The storm in Mark's Gospel did not have the final word. The calm did. And in your life, too, the storm is not the destination — the other side is.
So breathe. He is in your boat. He has not forgotten you, and He is more than able to carry you through. Whatever is raging around you or within you today, hear Him speak over it: Peace. Be still.
A Moment to Reflect
What storm — around you or within you — do you need to hand to Jesus today?
What would change if you truly believed He is in the boat with you, fully able to bring you through?
A Blessing for You
Beloved, may the peace of Christ — the peace that calmed the sea — settle over your heart today. May you feel His nearness in the very middle of the storm, and trust that He is carrying you safely to the other side. When the waves rise, may you hear His voice above them: Quiet. Be still. You are held. You are safe. You are His.
He is in the boat with you — and at the sound of His voice, even the storms grow still. 💜
